This piece is an original woodcut matrix hand-carved by J. Borges, used in the printing process of his xilogravuras. It is from this wooden block that the image is born: every cut, groove, and mark reveals the artist’s gesture and the artisanal process that made his work a landmark of Brazilian folk art. Born in Bezerros, Pernambuco, José Francisco Borges became one of the most important names in Brazilian popular culture, bringing Northeastern woodcut art to international recognition. His works have been exhibited in renowned institutions such as the Louvre Museum in Paris, as well as museums and cultural centres throughout Brazil and abroad.

The matrices hold remarkable historical and artistic importance, as they are directly connected to the artist’s creative process. They preserve the traces of manual printing, carved woodwork, and the traditional techniques of Northeastern Brazilian woodcut art maintained over decades.
