Ilha do Ferro, a district of Pão de Açúcar in the interior of Alagoas, is a destination that enchants with its combination of natural beauty, riverside culture, and strong, authentic, and diverse handicrafts. With approximately 500 inhabitants, the community has developed crafts mainly related to wood carving, embroidery, and artisanal fishing. Among the most prominent cultural expressions is the "Boa Noite" embroidery, a centuries-old textile technique named after a local flower, applied to unravelled linen threads and worked by artisans in a cooperative. There are also sculptures made of umburana wood; many artisans recycle discarded roots, branches, or trunks to create art and a strong visual identity that is noticeable in the colourful houses, parapets, decorative benches, chairs, panels, and scenographic pieces made by the island's artisans. Regarding the local flora, the landscape of Ilha do Ferro reveals a characteristic fusion of the interior with the São Francisco River. Mandacarus, xiquexiques, macambiras, and catingueiras dot the arid landscape, contrasting with the humid riverbanks. These cacti not only frame the scenery but also inspire local art: they appear as themes in sculptures and paintings, as well as in decorative pieces depicting the fauna and flora of the Caatinga. A very concrete example of this dialogue between art and nature is the "Cactus with Bird," a wooden sculpture produced by artisans from Ilha do Ferro, which combines the symbol of the cactus with elements of the local birdlife, representing this encounter between the Sertão (backlands) and riverside life.
