☆ Why is this piece so special? ☆
José Miguel da Silva is a native of Bezerros, Pernambuco (1961), son of the renowned woodcut master J. Borges (1935 – 2024), and has dedicated himself to art for over 50 years. From a young age, he helped in the production and sale of his father's cordel literature. Gradually, he began practicing wood carving on scraps of wood in the workshop. His father, enchanted by his small matrices, began to guide him artistically, even as an apprentice. The artist perfected his technique and created his own tools, such as the distinctive star-shaped key. In addition to drawing inspiration from Northeastern Brazilian folklore traditions, he addresses contemporary and social issues. Currently one of the biggest names in Brazilian popular woodcut art, his work has received several awards: notably in 2014 at the Naïf Art Biennial of Brazil with his best-known work "A Feira Nordestina" (The Northeastern Fair). His work is widely valued abroad, especially in the United States and Japan. The tradition continues into another generation; Jefferson, also known as José Jefferson da Silva, is the son of the wood engraver J. Miguel, and, like his father, is also dedicated to the art of wood engraving.
